The RRB Selection Process
The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) publishes (every time for their recruitments) an official notice on their website & in “Employment News” (A publication of the Government of India). to invite eligible applicants for various posts like Junior Engineer (JE) & Senior Section Engineer (SSE).

The different India Railway posts demand & follow different selection process but most common stages are written exam & personal interview. Candidates are selected on the basis of their eligibility verified from their application & documents submitted.

The selected applicants are then invited for a written exam before one month of the exam. The selected candidates receive an invitation by mail having further details of the exam. The same list is also published on RRB websites. Candidates can check and download their admit cards from the website also.

All candidates have to apply through the single online application form that is common to all announced posts i.e. Junior Engineer (JE), Junior Engineer (Information Technology) [JE(IT)], Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA) through the link provided/published on all of the RRBs official website. The RRB recruitment process will be completed in the following stages:

  • 1st stage Computer Based Test (CBT),
  • 2nd stage CBT, and
  • Document Verification/ Medical Examination (as/if applicable).

 

The selection of the candidate will be made strictly on CBTs merit.

The RRB will intimate about the date, time and venue for all the activities such as CBTs, Medical Examination, Document Verification or any other additional activity to the eligible candidates in due course.
1st Stage CBT (Common for all announced posts of this CEN)

  • Total Duration: 90 minutes
  • No of Questions: 100

 

The 1st stage CBT will serve as the basis for short listing of candidates best suitable for these posts as per score they get in this exam. This exam consists of basic questions from academics and little technical section (as per technical qualifications prescribed for the posts) to confirm the educational standards of the candidates.

The normalized score from the 1st stage exam shall be considered for the short listing process of candidates only for the 2nd stage exam on merit basis.

The 1st stage CBT exam will include objective type questions with multiple choice answers from the following syllabus:

Mathematics: Number systems, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM and HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar & Clock, Pipes & Cistern.

General Intelligence and Reasoning: Analogies, Alphabetical and Number Series, Coding and Decoding, Mathematical operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagram, Data Interpretation and Sufficiency, Conclusions and Decision Making, Similarities and Differences, Analytical reasoning, Classification, Directions, Statement – Arguments and Assumptions etc.

General Awareness: Knowledge of Current affairs, Indian geography, culture and history of India including freedom struggle, Indian Polity, and constitution, Indian Economy, Environmental issues concerning India and the World, Sports, General scientific and technological developments etc.

General Science: Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences (up to 10th Standard CBSE syllabus).

2nd Stage CBT

  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • No of Questions: 150

The candidates Shortlisted on the basis of normalized marks obtained by them in the 1st Stage CBT Exam are eligible to appear in the 2nd Stage CBT exam. The standard formula to shortlist candidates for the 2nd stage CBT is 15 times the category wise total vacancy of Posts announced by the RRB based on their merit in 1st Stage CBT. However, candidates should note that Indian Railways holds the complete right to increase/decrease this count for any post as per the actual requirement of the manpower.

Like CBT 1stage exam the CBT2nd stage exam will also have objective type questions with multiple choice options and most probably will have questions from the following sections:

General Awareness: Knowledge of Current affairs, Indian geography, culture and history of India including freedom struggle, Indian Polity, and constitution, Indian Economy, Environmental issues concerning India and the World, Sports, General scientific and technological developments etc.
Physics and Chemistry: Up to 10th standard CBSE syllabus.
Basics of Computers and Applications: Architecture of Computers; input and Output devices; Storage devices, Networking, Operating System like Windows, Unix, Linux; MS Office; Various data representation; Internet and Email; Websites & Web Browsers; Computer Virus.
Basics of Environment and Pollution Control: Basics of Environment; Adverse effect of environmental pollution and control strategies; Air, water and Noise pollution, their effect and control; Waste Management, Global warming; Acid rain; Ozone depletion.
Technical Abilities: The educational qualifications mentioned against each post shown in the table, have been grouped into different exam groups as below. Questions on the Technical abilities will be framed in the syllabus defined for various Exam Groups.

Document Verification Stage

The candidates shortlisted on the basis of normalized marks obtained by them in 2nd Stage CBT will be eligible for Documentation Verification. The shortlisted candidates will be intimated by RRB to appear in the DV stage with all the required information like date, time & venue.
